Maserati Alfieri to Spawn Alfa Romeo Sibling

Recently Maserati announced that the Alfieri will begin production in 2017. This is great news.

The Alfieri is built on a platform that is basically a shortened version of the platform that underpins the Maserati Quattroporte and Ghibli sedans. The platform may also be used for a Dodge Challenger replacement in the future.

That platform is going to be quite popular in the FCA brand as there is information now that suggests the same platform will be used to underpin an Alfa Romeo "specialty sports car." Auto Express cites an inside source as it reports that Alfa Romeo will build a flagship model based on the platform that will likely be called the 6C.

Quote:
The resurgent Italian brand is working on a new front-engined rear-wheel drive coupe, tipped to be called the Alfa Romeo 6C.

Alfa’s answer to the Jaguar F-Type and Porsche 911 will be based on the Maserati Alfieri concept - shown at the Geneva Motor Show...
This Alfa Romeo sports car will be released the year after the Maserati Alfieri. Both vehicles are going to be powered by the Ferrari-built twin-turbo 3.0L V-6 engine that is currently being used in the Ghibli.

The Maserati and Alfa Romeo sports cars will be differentiated through their styling. The Maserati is said to take on a more elegant look, while the Alfa Romeo is going with a more aggressive and sporty look.

Both vehicles are going to be competing against the likes of the Porsche 911 and the Jaguar F-Type.

Being familiar with what the 8C was about and also having seen one in person and then of course seeing the 4c, the thought of what the 6c will be like is interesting, especially with this bit of what's about to happen

Here's to hoping that the production is not set for the end of 2017 because that is a 2 year wait and even more for the Alfa Romeo coming after the Alfieri.

When you consider all the models that Alfa Romeo has planned, I think it makes sense that it will take this long for the 6C to come out. There will be plenty more Alfa Romeos that come out between now and then.

If both uses the same platform and engine, would it not be better for Maserati to come out with a sportier version of the alfieri?

Exactly.

Volume products is what they're after for the most part, those core models, and they seem to be having some set to roll out soon enough to get that good momentum, since it surely isn't something to happen with the 6C, due to it being micro-niche.

But why not put the Alfa Romeo Sibling under the maserati marque if they share the same platform and engine? Would that not be more cost efficient when it comes to production?

Probably for reasons that they need to develop AR as well and a model like that is a core one.

It is Alfa Romeo.

It is not uncommon for companies to use the same engine or platform to create models under different brands. The personality of each car is different, and because of that they would appeal to different types of customers.
